The NBA and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Department of Agricultural Economics celebrated scholarship recipients at a dinner on Nov. 1.
The honored students are part of the Ag Banking and Finance program at UNL. Students in the program are studying agribusiness with an emphasis in banking and finance and receive a scholarship from the NBA. Since the program's inception in 2006, the Nebraska banking industry has provided over $1.1 million in scholarships, and more than 175 students have completed internships through the program. In letters sent to Governor Jim Pillen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance Director Kelly Lammers, Nebraska Legislature’s Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee and the Nebraska State Patrol, the NBA shared how the banking industry is working to combat phishing schemes through the #BanksNeverAskThat campaign.
The campaign, spearheaded by the American Bankers Association (ABA), helps banks educate their customers about phishing scams and common fraud tactics. Participants in this free campaign have access to a toolkit that includes graphics, social media posts, digital signage, printables and more. New this year are Spanish-language resources. All resources are free, and banks do not have to be an ABA member to participate. Last week, the NBA joined local bankers to engage University of Nebraska at Kearney College of Business and Technology (CBT) students in discussions about careers in banking during a Meet the Bankers event. The NBA also staffed a booth in the CBT lobby and provided coffee and donuts to students. The event concluded with a pizza lunch. Thank you to the bankers who attended! This event was part of the Bank On Your Future initiative, a comprehensive campaign aimed at addressing the workforce needs of Nebraska's banking sector and promoting banking as the industry of choice for a broader and more diverse group of young Nebraskans. The Nebraska Bankers Association recognized David and Ann Bruntz of Friend with the 2023 NBA Agribusiness Recognition Award. The award has been presented each year since 1983 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state of Nebraska and its agricultural industry. The presentation was made during the NBA’s Fall Agribusiness Conference in Lincoln. David hails from a family farm in Friend, while Ann grew up on a ranch near Stuart. After graduating from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, they established Bruntz Farming & Feeding, Inc. near Friend. Both David and Ann have championed agriculture at the local, state and national levels. David has served as chairman of the Nebraska Corn Board, president of Nebraska Cattlemen, regional vice president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and as a member of the U.S. Meat Export Federation Executive Committee. Ann’s leadership roles include chairman of the Nebraska Beef Council, president of the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Foundation Board and president of the Nebraska Cattlewomen. She also worked as a fundraiser for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska Foundation. Together, they established the Beef Industry Scholars Scholarship in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Bruntz Family Award for Teaching at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. Both David and Ann promoted agriculture through trade missions in several countries. The NBA is proud to recognize David and Ann Bruntz for their outstanding contributions to Nebraska's agriculture and their unwavering community service. Their leadership and commitment reflect the spirit of the NBA Agribusiness Recognition Award. From left: David Bruntz, Ann Bruntz and 2023-2024 NBA Chair Lydell Woodbury, First Nebraska Bank (Valley)
